Why all the "Furry" stuff?

Why all the "Furry" stuff?

Those of you who have never encountered it before may be asking - 'why so may funny animal characters'?

Easily answered:
                   Because I like 'em!

In fact, I'm a nut. I love funny animals to bits. I have a vast art collection of cool critters. I've been a contributor to APA's such as "Rowrbrazzle" that were the hearts-blood of furry fandom in the 'good old days'.

Funny animals (technically called 'anthropomorphs') are extremely useful story telling tools. They have totemic/mythic connections which readily lend themselves to characterisation or 'undercurrent themes' . This has been very useful in deadly serious novels such as "A Whisper of Wings". They are also wonderful creations to use for comedy! A walking talkinganimal character is decidedly not 'real': We therefore tend to cut it a lot of slack and simply enjoy the show!

I have worked with every type of anthropomorphic character from "talking animal" ("Watership Down" style) to 'toons to anime. My favorite 'furry' characters are realistically proportioned humanoids: Tank Vixens is a perfect example (human proportioned, proper head-to-body ratio characters)

Are 'furries' all that I do?

Hell no. A storyteller uses tools appropriate to the story. But when I'm having fun, I tend to think in terms of 'furries'. They're fun, they're flexible - and they're pure fantasy.

There is a considerable fan network of "furry" enthusiasts all about the world. Furry fandom is immensely more 'pro-active' than mainstream SF and media fandoms: Most 'furries' are creators or otherwise talented folk that contribute actively to the hobby.

Sub question: Why so many pictures of sexy 'furry' girls?

  • Answer:
    Because I'm a screaming hetero!

  • Actually, I was struck by lightning at the age of eight while watching the "Amazing Three" (or for US viewers, "The Wonder Three"), and fell passionately in love with the sexy bunny rabbit character. The next thing fate had in wait for me was Disney's 'Robin Hood'. One look at Maid Marion, and I was a lost cause.

  • Can't say it slowed down my love life, though!
